Since 2022, James Johnson has held a significant presence in the Pacers' locker room, functioning as a crucial backup player with limited minutes on the court. Throughout the 2022 to 2025 span, he has been active in 39 regular-season games, accumulating a total of 246 minutes played. During the Pacers' run to the NBA Finals in the spring of 2025, he was granted five opportunities to take the floor.
The Pacers are currently about $2.2 million away from reaching the salary cap threshold for the luxury tax, with 14 players on standard guaranteed contracts in their roster. Acquiring a veteran minimum contract for a free agent would result in a salary cap space reduction of approximately $2.45 million. Consequently, unless the Pacers can clear salary through trades, they will not have adequate room to retain James Johnson in their opening day lineup.
